Rove Linked to Alabama Case
Adam Zagorin of TIME/CNN

A Republican lawyer claims she was told that Karl Rove — while
serving as President Bush's top political adviser — had intervened in
the Justice Department's prosecution of Alabama's most prominent
Democrat. Longtime Alabama G.O.P. activist Dana Jill Simpson first
made the allegation in June, but has now provided new details in a
lengthy sworn statement to the House Judiciary Committee. The
Committee is expected to hold public hearings on the Alabama case
next week as part of its investigation of possible political interference
by the Bush Administration in the activities of the Department of
Justice.

The Pravda of the South Speaks Again
Early yesterday, a contact on the G.O.P. staff of the House Judiciary
Committee told me that her colleagues had taken a step to attempt to
pre-empt the hearings that the Committee had originally scheduled
for Thursday (now postponed), at which the Siegelman prosecution
will appear center stage. They were, she told me, going to use a time-
honored technique: the interview transcripts would be leaked to a
reporter “who can be trusted to get our message across.” That is, not
a real reporter, but a partisan attack animal. I wondered for a second
just who the G.O.P.’s attack dog would be. But in fact, it didn’t take
much effort, since it’s been clear for many months exactly who in the
press could be counted upon to present Republican Party
propaganda in the guise of a news story. And then, in a matter of
only a few hours, the story appeared, just where I knew it would, in
the
pages of the Birmingham News.

Did Rove, White House stymie criminal
probe in Alabama?
The Carpet Bagger Report

.... Given what we’ve learned over the course of the year about the
politicization of U.S. Attorneys’ offices, and the pressure to prosecute
Dems and look the other way for Republicans, the next question, of
course, is what drove the process in Alabama. Republican lawyer
Dana Jill Simpson, answering questions under oath from House
investigators, implicated Karl Rove in the mess.

In the interview, first obtained by Time and released today by the
committee, Simpson explains the context in which she knew what
Alabama Republican operative William Canary meant on a campaign
conference call in 2002 when he said “Karl” had gotten the Justice
Department on Siegelman. Simpson told House investigators that the
son of Gov. Bob Riley (R), Rob Riley, had told her about the
conversations between Rove and Canary.

Exposing the GOP Slime Machine
Legal Schnauzer

Part of the transcript of Dana Jill Simpson's testimony before
Congressional lawyers was leaked yesterday, and it is a historic
document. Simpson exposes the sleaze and depravity at the heart of
Republican politics in Alabama, and she does it in a way that has
never been done before.

It surely pained the honchos at The Birmingham News to report this
story. In fact, they never explain how they obtained an advance copy
of the transcript. But Simpson's testimony about the machinations
behind the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman
evidently provided a stench so strong that even the News could not
ignore it.

Actually, as we will see in a bit, the News' coverage probably is an
attempt to slant the news rather than report it.

House Judiciary Committee Releases
Simpson Transcript
by Glynn Wilson of Locust Fork News

The House Judiciary Committee released a transcript today of
explosive new testimony showing a clear-cut case of White House
involvement in using the federal courts to manipulate the electoral
system of the United States.

North Alabama attorney and GOP Whistleblower Jill Simpson's
testimony expands on her sworn affidavit from May of this year. In the
affidavit and in her statements to Congress, she documents the
involvement of White House and Bush Justice Department officials in
scheming to prosecute former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman to
keep him from winning future elections.

At the heart of this scheme lies Alabama Governor Bob Riley's son
Rob Riley, who told her in several conversations about a plan to
recruit a Republican federal judge to handle the case against
Siegelman.

"Rob told me that Mark Fuller was still a government contractor in
2005 and a United States Federal judge, which I found unusual," Ms.
Simpson says, so she began to conduct her own research in the
judge and concluded that he had a conflict of interest and should not
have sat in judgment in the case.

The United States Attorneys Scandal Comes
to Mississippi
By Adam Cohen of the New York Times

Paul Minor is the son of Bill Minor, a legendary Mississippi journalist
and chronicler of the civil rights movement. He is also a wealthy trial
lawyer and a mainstay of Mississippi’s embattled Democratic Party.
Mr. Minor has contributed $500,000 to Democrats over the years,
including more than $100,000 to John Edwards, a fellow trial lawyer.
He fought hard to stop the Mississippi Supreme Court from being
taken over by pro-business Republicans.

Mr. Minor’s political activity may have cost him dearly. He is serving
an 11-year sentence, convicted of a crime that does not look much
like a crime at all. The case is one of several new ones coming to
light that suggest that the department’s use of criminal prosecutions
to help Republicans win elections may go farther than anyone
realizes.
