Conyers threatens contempt charges for Rove
By Jared Allen of TheHill.com

The standoff between the House and the Bush administration over the
congressional testimony of top White House aides continued on
Thursday when House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers
Jr. (D-Mich.) threatened to hold Karl Rove in contempt if he follows
through on his refusal to respond to a committee subpoena.
Conyers and Administrative Law subcommittee Chairwoman Linda
Sanchez (D-Calif.) were responding to a July 1 letter they received
from Rove’s attorney, Robert D. Luskin, in which Luskin said his client
would be unable to appear before Sanchez’s subcommittee. The
panel is investigating the politicization within the Justice Department
and had subpoenaed Rove to testify before the subcommittee next
Thursday.

Press Release from the House Judiciary
Committee - Conyers and Sánchez: Rove
Not Immune from Testifying
Press Release by John Conyers

..."We want to make clear that the Subcommittee will convene as
scheduled and expects Mr. Rove to appear, and that a refusal to
appear in violation of the subpoena could subject Mr. Rove to
contempt proceedings, including statutory contempt under federal law
and proceedings under the inherent contempt authority of the House
of Representatives," Conyers and Sánchez wrote.

....The Subcommittee is prepared to consider objections to specific
questions on privilege grounds, but there is no proper basis for the
refusal to appear altogether.

Karl Rove NOT Immune from Congressional
Subpoena
by Glynn Wilson of the Locust Fork Journal

Rove was scheduled to appear before the committee on July 10 - or
face arrest. There’s no word yet on whether he will be arrested - or
how.

When informed of the news, Don Siegelman issued the following
statement:

“Rove said he would only appear before the House Judiciary
Committee to address the Siegelman case if he would not be sworn to
tell the truth, that he be given all the questions in writing in advance
and that no one could be there to take down whatever he might say.

“Now I ask you, Does that sound like a man who intends to tell the
truth? And now Rove just flat out says ‘I’m not going to show up at all!’
Is he trying to skirt the truth?”
