Rep. Lamar Smith helping out Rove on
Siegelman.... awww, sweet
by Larisa Alexandrovna of At-Largely
This is getting to be rather fun. Karl Rove - who would not show and
honor his subpoena and claimed he could not answer the committee
questions because of Executive Privilege - answers the committees
questions, on paper. How cute is that? Okay, let's go down the list. It
should be noted that Rove's former client, Lamar Smith (R-TX) who is
on the House Judiciary Committee sent these questions. This is an
important issue....

Jill Simpson Responds to Karl Rove Denial
by Glynn Wilson of Locust Fork Journal
Jill Simpson breathes another sigh of consternation over the
telephone from Rainsville as the news hits the blogs that Karl Rove
has once again tried to deny influencing the prosecution of former
Alabama Governor Don Siegelman - without raising his right hand and
swearing to tell the truth under oath.

EXCLUSIVE: Karl Rove Issues New Denials
in Gov. Siegelman Prosecution in Written
Answers to HJC
by By Kate Klonick of TPM
....Below is a sample of the Q&A. Rove's answer is in italics, and is
emblematic of his response to all 14 questions raised by Smith.
1. Before former Alabama Governor Donald E. Siegelman's
initial indictment in May 2005, did you ever communicate with
any Department of Justice officials, State of Alabama officials,
or any individual other than Dana Jill Simpson, Esq., regarding
Governor Siegelman's investigation or potential prosecution? If
so, please state separately for each communication the date,
time, location, and means of the communication, the official or
individual with whom you communicated, and the content of the
communication.
I have never communicated, either directly or indirectly, with
Justice Department or Alabama officials about the investigation,
indictment, potential prosecution, prosecution, conviction, or
sentencing of Governor Siegelman, or about any other matter
related to his case, nor have I asked any other individual to
communicate about these matters on my behalf. I have never
attempted, either directly or indirectly, to influence these
matters.

Rove All-But Confirms He DID Talk to Non-
DOJ People About Siegelman
by Empty Wheel
...So, even with Rove's careful parsing, even having gotten questions
tailor made to allow Rove to squirm out of answering real questions on
this matter, he basically refuses to deny that he communicated about
Siegelman's prosecution with other people. Rove doesn't even deny
he spoke to Bill Canary or Rob Riley (Rob is the son of the governor,
and therefore not an Alabama official) about it, which is one of the
central implications of all the allegations out there!
It was a nice trick, Lamar Smith, to try to pretend that Rove had
answered real, antagonistic questions about his involvement in the
Siegelman affair. But I think all you've accomplished is to make it clear
that he was, in fact, involved in the plot to prosecute Governor
Siegelman.

Siegelman supporters call for expanded probe
Associated Press for Huntville Times
....Two weeks ago, the Justice Department informed Siegelman's
attorneys that it had recently discovered that, during mistrial
proceedings, U.S. Marshals informed Fuller that federal investigators
concluded the e-mails were fakes. But the information was not passed
along to Siegelman's attorneys for cross-examination.

It appears Rove is trying to delay and/or avoid contempt charges by substituting a written denial that is not signed or sworn under oath.
