The former Governor Don Siegelman was so popular that he served in Alabama politics for 26 years. He was so un-beatable that GOP political operatives are said to have nicknamed him “The Cockroach.” Those operatives, intent on establishing a permanent GOP majority in their state, found that no matter how much money they spent, no matter which candidate they put up against him, no matter how bad the press and even judicial prosecution was pitted against him, he won and kept on winning.

Then they started playing dirty. Really dirty.

Until Don Siegelman won his last election, sweeping into the governorship with 57% of the vote, Don had never been accused of corrupt or criminal acts.
